The following proposal has been submitted for consideration at the next meeting between Inspired Property Management & the Parklands Board of Directors (early June 2022). Feedback from this proposal will be published on this website as an update post and in the ‘Proposals’ ‘Feedback’ section.

Name: Natalie Walton & Traci-Ann Shepherd (on behalf of Parklands Estate Residents’ Association)
Title of your proposal : Herbal remedies – growing herbs around the estate
Does your proposal require a time-sensitive decision?: Yes
If time-sensitive, please indicate any deadlines you may be working towards (e.g. funding, planting, nesting seasons, national & local initiatives): For 2023: Growing season would indicate that seeds can be grown on window ledges now for planing out late spring and early summer – this is in partnership with the Mental health museum and good for building the relationship with them for future activity.
For consideration we advise your proposal supports some or all of the following (please check all that apply):
- Make Parklands Estate a great place to live by promoting and encouraging community spirit
- Have support from residents of Parklands Estate (inc. shareholders)
- Forge strong links with the local community for the benefit of all residents living on the estate
- Ensure the estate is environmentally sustainable, respectful and promotes the natural environment
- Be budget saving or have funding available to support your idea
Please describe your proposal, thinking about the above: Asking residents to grow herbs from seed and to see their plants become part of the estate will galvanise community spirit across the estate and bring people out on one event day to plant out. Forging stronger links to the museum for future programme. adding perennial and plants that over winter means less replacing of annual plants that are not good for the environment. Grow your own encourages care for the plants themselves and good way to encourage people to care for the estate. Budgets seeds are low cost and less replacing. herbs like borage are flowering and can add colour.
Do you have evidence of community consultation (e.g. emails, written feedback, names of residents supporting, meeting minutes):?: Yes. Consultation October 2021 – request for community activity in estate relating to the gardening.
Do you know the cost of your proposal and how we might raise funds as a collective to cover the costs?: Yes
If yes, please provide details. If no, please provide details on how the Residents’ Association Committee can support you to gather this information: No more than £50 for fertiliser to replenish the soil on the estate as it has been neglected. Cost of seeds. Community collection to cover the costs – there is also the possibility to get free compost from the council.

So we have been told we cannot use desolate areas of the estate to grow hardy herbs as shrubs will be taken out and the gardeners might step on them.
We can grow what wver we like in the walled area at thr back of Ashworth Square. Id like to know if people would like to have herbs around the estate and not tucked away?
